We live in the information age. Each age in the human history is known for the dominant theme and work. Industrial age is known for mechanization of work. Similarly information age is and will be known for innovation. Innovation is the ability to combine idea with information to create new values. A new value may be a new product or a new service or a new algorithm or may even be a new business method or model. While getting a useful idea is challenging, protecting a successful idea from competitors is still more difficult and challenging. Ideas, concepts being intangible may be expressed in multiple ways , and as such may stolen or misused or exploited by others. Any such situation in which in ideas can't be protected properly, dents the motivation for an innovation process and innovator himself. In addition, any environment that prohibits innovation hurts a business enterprises more dramatically and cumulatively impedes economic growth.
Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) are means to achieve that protection for useful outcomes of innovation process. IPR- being legally enforceable methods provide a general framework for establishing ownership to an innovative creation to an individual or group or the institution. At the same time they make that society at large benefits from such creation and there by creates a healthy and encouraging environment for creative folks.
Engineering is the application of natural sciences to work and performance. Engineering innovation is a process of coming with new work methods or process to radically improve work productivity and enhance performance. In order to unleash the creative energies of their students and faculty , engineering institutions must institutionalise IPR process and procedures.
